How Big Should a Home Office Be? Size Guide

The right home office size depends mostly on what has to fit in it: one desk, a desk plus storage, or a workspace for two people. A single person can work in as little as 50 to 70 square feet (about 4.6 to 6.5 square meters), but a comfortable home office for full-time work is usually 100 to 150 square feet (about 9 to 14 square meters), which is roughly a 10 by 10 ft (about 3 by 3 m) to 10 by 14 ft (about 3 by 4.3 m) room. Two people working at the same time need around 150 to 200 square feet (about 14 to 19 square meters).

These numbers only work if the furniture and clearances are planned properly. In my experience, a well-laid-out 90 square foot office feels better than a badly furnished 140 square foot one, because the desk position, the chair clearance and the daylight matter more than the raw floor area.

Typical Home Office Size by Type

Not every home office needs a separate room. The table below shows the typical sizes for the most common setups.

Type of workspace Typical size What fits
Desk nook or closet office 15 to 30 sq ft (about 1.4 to 2.8 square meters) Compact desk, chair, wall shelves
Compact office 50 to 80 sq ft (about 4.6 to 7.4 square meters) Desk, chair, one storage unit
Standard home office 80 to 120 sq ft (about 7.4 to 11 square meters) Desk, chair, bookcase or filing cabinet, printer
Comfortable full-time office 120 to 150 sq ft (about 11 to 14 square meters) L-shaped desk, storage wall, reading chair
Office for two people 150 to 200 sq ft (about 14 to 19 square meters) Two workstations, shared storage
Office with client visits 200 to 250 sq ft (about 19 to 23 square meters) and more Workstation plus a small meeting table for two to four people

A spare bedroom of 10 by 11 ft (about 3 by 3.4 m) is the classic home office and suits most people who work from home every day. If you plan the office as part of a new house, it is worth comparing it with the other rooms in our room size guide.

Furniture Dimensions and Clearances

The size of a home office is really the sum of its furniture and the space you need to use it. These are the dimensions I plan with:

Element Typical dimension
Standard desk 48 to 60 in wide (about 122 to 152 cm), 24 to 30 in deep (about 61 to 76 cm)
L-shaped desk 60 by 60 in (about 152 by 152 cm) or larger
Desk height 28 to 30 in (about 71 to 76 cm), sit-stand desks adjustable
Chair zone behind the desk At least 36 in (about 91 cm), better 42 to 48 in (about 107 to 122 cm)
Walkway past a desk or chair 30 to 36 in (about 76 to 91 cm)
Filing cabinet with open drawer About 30 in (about 76 cm) clear space in front
Bookcase or shelving 12 to 16 in deep (about 30 to 40 cm)

A quick calculation shows why the minimum sizes are realistic: a 60 in (about 152 cm) desk with 30 in (about 76 cm) depth plus 42 in (about 107 cm) of chair space already needs a zone of about 5 by 6 ft (about 1.5 by 1.8 m). Add a walkway and a storage unit, and you are quickly at 70 to 90 square feet (about 6.5 to 8.4 square meters).

Tip: Always check that the chair can roll back fully without hitting a wall, a bed, or the swing of the door. This is the clearance people most often underestimate when they plan an office on paper.

How Big Should a Home Office Be for Your Way of Working?

Occasional Work

If you only work from home a few hours a week, a desk nook of 4 to 5 ft (about 1.2 to 1.5 m) width in a hallway, under a stair or in a corner of the living room is often enough. A converted closet works if it is at least 24 in (about 61 cm) deep and around 5 ft (about 1.5 m) wide.

Full-Time Work

For eight hours a day, plan a separate room with a door. Around 100 square feet (about 9.3 square meters) gives you a proper desk, a good chair, storage, and space to stand up and move without feeling boxed in. Video calls are another reason for a closed room: you control the background, the light and the noise.

Two People or Hybrid Use

Two desks can share one room if they are placed side by side along a long wall or facing away from each other on opposite walls. Plan at least 150 square feet (about 14 square meters). If both people are on calls frequently, two smaller rooms of 70 to 90 square feet (about 6.5 to 8.4 square meters) each are often the better solution than one large shared office.

Office and Guest Room Combined

A dual-use room needs space for a sleeper sofa or daybed in addition to the workstation. Around 120 to 150 square feet (about 11 to 14 square meters) works well. Our bedroom size guide helps if the room should also work as a proper guest bedroom.

Open Work Areas in the Living Space

In many modern floor plans the workspace is not a separate room but a defined zone next to the living or dining area. This works well for occasional work and for families who want to keep an eye on the children. Plan the zone with about 40 to 60 square feet (about 3.7 to 5.6 square meters), place it near a window, and keep it out of the main walkway between the kitchen, the living area and a terrace door. A low shelf or a change in flooring helps to separate the work zone visually.

In Plan7Architect you can place the desk, shelving and chair from the 3D object library directly into the living area and check in the 3D view whether the work zone still leaves enough space for the sofa and the main circulation paths.

Layout Tips: Light, Door and Desk Position

  • Daylight from the side: place the desk so that the window is to the side of the screen. A window directly behind the monitor causes glare, and a window behind your back creates reflections on the screen.
  • View of the door: many people feel more comfortable when they can see the door from the desk instead of sitting with their back to it.
  • Door swing: the door should not swing into the chair zone or block a bookcase. A door that opens against a side wall saves usable space.
  • Outlets and data: plan several outlets near the desk and, if possible, a network connection. Extension cords across the floor are a sign that the electrical layout was not planned with the furniture.
  • Noise: avoid placing the office directly next to the laundry room, the kitchen or a child’s bedroom if you work during the day.

Common Home Office Planning Mistakes

Choosing the Smallest Room by Default

The office often ends up in whatever room is left over. If you work from home every day, it deserves a room with good daylight and a reasonable size, not the darkest corner of the house.

Forgetting Storage

Printers, paper, files and equipment need space. Without a cabinet or storage wall, the desk becomes the storage, and the office feels cluttered no matter how big it is.

Ignoring the Furniture You Actually Own

A large L-shaped desk or a standing desk with a wide frame needs more room than a simple table. Measure your real furniture before you decide on the room size.

Not Checking the Room in 3D

An office that looks spacious in a 2D plan can feel tight once the desk, the chair and the shelving are placed. A quick check in 3D shows immediately whether the room works.

How to Determine the Right Home Office Size

  1. Decide how often you work at home and whether you need a door for calls and concentration.
  2. List the furniture: desk size, chair, storage, printer, second seat or guest bed.
  3. Add the clearances: at least 36 in (about 91 cm) behind the chair and 30 to 36 in (about 76 to 91 cm) for walkways.
  4. Choose the location with good daylight and away from noisy rooms.
  5. Draw the room with exact dimensions, place the furniture and check the door swing and the window position.
  6. Review the room in 3D before you finalize the floor plan.

If you are planning a complete house, the office has to fit into the overall layout together with the bedrooms and living areas. Our guide on creating floor plans with dimensions shows how to draw rooms accurately from the start, and with Plan7Architect you can try several office positions in the same plan and compare them side by side.
