What to Look for in a Free Blueprint Maker
Many tools call themselves blueprint makers, but they produce very different results. Check these points before you start drawing:
- Is it really free? Some tools are open source and completely free. Others offer a free plan with limited projects, low-resolution or watermarked exports, or paid printing to scale.
- Scale and dimensions: a blueprint has to be drawn to scale, with dimensions for every wall, opening and room. Check whether dimensions are created automatically or have to be added by hand.
- More than the floor plan: builders and building departments usually also want sections, elevations and a roof plan, often a site plan too.
- Printing and export: you need a PDF or print to scale, and ideally DWG/DXF if an architect or engineer will continue your plan.
- Effort: free CAD programs can do a lot, but drawing a complete house line by line takes many hours of work and practice.
Floor Plan Sketch vs. Real Blueprint: The Key Difference
Most free tools stop at the floor plan: rooms, walls, doors and furniture. A blueprint set for a house goes further, and this is where the effort really starts. If you want to know exactly where the line is, read our article Floor Plan vs. Blueprint: What Is the Difference? This is how typical free tools and Plan7Architect handle the parts of a blueprint:
| Blueprint part | Typical free tool | Plan7Architect |
|---|---|---|
| Floor plan with dimensions | Room sizes shown, detailed dimensions added by hand | Dimensions are created automatically and update with every change |
| Roof plan | No roof tool or a simple roof object | Choose the roof type, the roof is constructed automatically, including dormers |
| Sections and elevations | Not included, or drawn by hand in CAD | Generated from the model and always up to date |
| Foundation and framing | Not included | Foundation planning, timber construction tools and beam structures |
| Site and terrain | Flat ground | Terrain modeling with contour lines and sloped lots |
| Plan sheets for the permit | Images, or a manual sheet layout in CAD | Plan assembly with title blocks, print to scale or save as PDF |
| Files for your architect or builder | Images, or DXF only in some tools | DWG/DXF import and export |
For a first layout, a free tool is often enough. If you plan to build, it is worth knowing early which drawings you will need. Our guide on how to create a floor plan to scale explains the basics.
1. Plan7Architect: Best Low-Cost Option for Real House Blueprints
Price: Original price was: $259.99.$169.99Current price is: $169.99. one-time purchase, lifetime license, no subscription (not free)
Platform: Windows desktop software, activation on up to 3 PCs
Best for: homeowners, self-builders and contractors who need complete house blueprints with dimensions, sections and permit plans
Plan7Architect is not free, and we list it first because it is what many people move to when a free blueprint maker can no longer finish the job. It is a dedicated house planning program made for beginners without CAD experience. You plan with real walls, floors, ceilings, roofs, stairs and foundations, and the program creates the floor plans, the 3D model, the sections and the elevations from the same model.

Dimensions and Scale Without Extra Work
You enter exact lengths, angles and distances, and the dimensions are created automatically. When you move a wall, the dimensions, the room areas and the 3D model update with it. Living area and usable area are calculated for you, and you can work in feet and inches or in meters and switch at any time.
Everything a Blueprint Set Needs
All the building tools for a complete set of plans are included:
- Automatic roof construction for gable, hip, shed, flat and mansard roofs, including dormers
- Foundations, slabs, stairs and beams
- Timber construction tools and custom beam structures
- Terrain modeling with contour lines and sloped lots
- Electrical, heating and plumbing planning
- Decks, terraces, balconies and railings
- Unlimited floors and buildings in one project, plan variants and detailed layer management

Permit Plans, PDF and DWG
Sections, elevations and complete plan sheets with title blocks are created directly from your model, which makes creating building permit drawings much simpler. You can print to scale, save as PDF and export DWG/DXF for your architect, engineer or builder. More about this on our page about house blueprint software.
3D Walkthrough and Renderings
Every blueprint comes with a 3D model you can walk through and furnish from an extensive object library. For photorealistic images and videos, you export the model to Twinmotion with all textures.

2. Sweet Home 3D: Best Free Blueprint Maker for Simple Floor Plans
Price: free, open source
Platform: Windows, Mac, Linux and a browser version
Best for: simple floor plans of apartments and single rooms on a zero budget
Sweet Home 3D lets you draw walls and rooms in 2D, add doors, windows and furniture and see the result in 3D right away. You can add dimension lines, show room areas and print the plan or save it as PDF. For a free tool, it is the most complete package.
For a house blueprint it reaches its limits: there is no real roof tool, no terrain, no sections or elevations, and DWG export needs plugins.
3. Floorplanner: Best Free Online Blueprint Maker
Price: free basic plan; Plus about $5 per month; Pro about $29 per month
Platform: web browser, plus mobile apps
Best for: quick floor plans in the browser, for example for real estate listings
Floorplanner is one of the easiest ways to draw a floor plan online. Wall lengths and room sizes are shown while you draw, and you can switch to 3D and furnish the rooms.
The free plan limits projects and floors, and exports are low resolution with a watermark. PDF and DXF need credits or a paid plan, and roofs, sections and elevations are not included. See our Floorplanner alternatives.
4. RoomSketcher: Best for Polished Floor Plans with a Free Start
Price: free plan with up to 2 projects; Pro about $144 per year
Platform: Windows, Mac, iPad and Android tablets
Best for: homeowners and real estate agents who want clean 2D and 3D floor plans
RoomSketcher creates attractive, easy-to-read floor plans with real walls, doors, windows and furniture. The free plan includes more than 4,000 furniture and material items and low-resolution 3D snapshots.
Measurements, total area and printing to scale are part of the paid plan. RoomSketcher is made for floor plans and interiors, so roofs, sections and construction details are not what it is built for.
5. Planner 5D: Best for Furnished Layouts on Any Device
Price: free plan; Premium $59.99 per year; Professional $399.99 per year
Platform: web browser, iOS, Android, Windows and Mac apps
Best for: furnishing and decorating rooms in 3D
Planner 5D is easy to learn and works on almost every device. You draw rooms, place furniture from a large catalog and see the result immediately in 3D.
The free plan only includes part of the catalog, and CAD export is limited to the Professional plan. It is an interior design tool, not a blueprint program for construction.
6. LibreCAD: Best Free 2D CAD for Hand-Drafted Blueprints
Price: free, open source
Platform: Windows, Mac and Linux
Best for: users with CAD experience who want to draft 2D blueprints for free
LibreCAD is a classic 2D CAD program with layers, blocks, snaps and dimension tools. It works natively with DXF, can open DWG files and prints to scale. If you know how to draft, you can draw a complete 2D blueprint with it.
Everything is drawn line by line: walls, openings, dimensions, sections and elevations. There is no 3D model, and every change means editing lines in every view.
7. FreeCAD: Best Free Program for Technical Users
Price: free, open source
Platform: Windows, Mac and Linux
Best for: technical users who want free CAD with BIM tools and have time to learn
FreeCAD is a parametric 3D CAD program, and its BIM workbench adds walls, windows, slabs, stairs and sections. Plan sheets with title blocks are created in the TechDraw workbench, and DXF files can be exchanged directly.
It is the most technical tool in this list. Many steps are manual, and it takes a lot of time before you can produce a complete set of house blueprints.
8. SmartDraw: Best for 2D Floor Plan Diagrams (Trial Only)
Price: not free; Individual $7.95 per month billed annually (introductory price for new customers); trial version available
Platform: web browser
Best for: office layouts and simple 2D floor plans with symbols
SmartDraw is often listed as a blueprint maker because its floor plans are drawn to scale with automatic wall dimensions and large symbol libraries for furniture, electrical, plumbing and HVAC.
It is only free during the trial, it has no 3D view, and it is a 2D diagram tool, so roofs, sections and elevations are not included.
